This page features a list of projects and programs Wikimedia Ukraine plans to implement in 2026. It was prepared based on the general strategic direction and proposals from community members. (See also a preliminary project calendar).

Note: this plan is preliminary and can change dependent on external circumstances, primarily the situation in Ukraine in the wake of Russia's full-scale invasion.

Content enrichment

Bridging text content gaps

  • Developing/refining criteria for assessing and prioritizing content gaps on Ukrainian Wikipedia
  • Content campaigns with external partners: Ukraine's Culture Diplomacy Month 2026 etc.
  • Support to thematic weeks on Ukrainian Wikipedia and sister projects at community members' requests (via microgrants)
  • Thematic campaigns devoted to world regions: CEE Spring and/or Asian Month and/or a campaign on Africa
  • Supporting initiatives to attract content to sister Wikimedia projects: Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikivoyage and others (for example, regular proofreading campaigns on Wikisource)
  • Support to initiatives for digitizing freely licensed sources, particularly in cooperation with partners
  • Supporting campaigns for attracting local content: WikiKharkivshchyna 2026 and/or others

Enhancing quality of content

  • Wikigrants to fund purchase of literature to improve Wikimedia proects (via microgrants)
  • Thematic campaign devoted to improvement of key articles (a week of popular/important articles)
  • Support of other initiatives for enhancing quality of content, such as expert evaluation and combatting disinformation (provided such initiatives arise)
    • Awarding the most productive authors of featured content on Wikipedia

Attracting media content

  • Support to the Wiki Loves Earth 2026 photo contest on the international stage
  • Wiki Loves Earth 2026 in Ukraine photo contest
  • Wiki Loves Monuments 2026 in Ukraine photo contest
  • Support of wikiexpeditions — trips to visit local places and sites to improve their coverage on Wikimedia projects (dependent on the situation in Ukraine in 2026, particularly on whether martial law will still be in place)
  • Working with photographers and photo journalists to attract media content (including collective and individual training sessions)
  • Photography grants for Wikimedians to cover events (via microgrants)
  • GLAM: cooperation with libraries, galleries, archives and museums to attract content to Wikimedia projects
    • “Open GLAM in Ukraine” project in cooperation with Wikimedia Sweden supported by the Swedish Institute (depending on the availability of funding)
    • Cooperation with other institutions to attract thematic media content within the GLAM program
  • Organizing contests and other content campaigns for GLAM specialists:
    • 1lib1ref and “EveryBookItsReader” for librarians
    • International Museum Day 2026 and/or other projects to cooperate with the museum community
  • Developing partnerships and conducting research in the field of cultural and natural heritage protection to support content enrichment activities within the Heritage Guard Network project (depending on the availability of funding)

Increasing Participation

Attracting new editors to Wikimedia projects

  • Wikimarathon 2026
  • Organizing contests and other content campaigns for attracting experts/specific target audiences
    • Wikipedia for School 2026 article contest (on Wikipedia and sister projects)
    • Science Photo Competition 2026 or other activities aimed at involving scientists in contributing to Wikimedia projects
    • Wiki Loves Folklore photo contest
  • Wikipedia Education Program — cooperation with educational institutions (schools and universities) for integration of Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects in the educational process
    • Conducting lectures, trainings, wikischools and other educational events for pupils and students
    • Development of the community of Wikimedia educators — annual conference, online events, support of communication channels
  • Development and support of online courses about Wikipedia
    • Support of the "Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom" course on Wikipedia for teachers (promotion of the basic level, regular courses on the intermediate/advanced levels)
    • Support of the course on Wikipedia for beginners
    • Development of other courses (depending on volunteer initiatives and/or the availability of funding)
  • Development of the community of researchers studying Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects:
    • Project “Wikipedia and wikiprojects in the focus of research”: networking, regular online events
    • Co-organization, in partnership with Wikimedia Poland, of the international conference “Open Knowledge: Wikimedia & Research” in Poland (depending on the availability of funding)

Increasing diversity of the community of editors, development of inclusiveness

  • Marathons for gender equality: two rounds of the campaign “(Un)known women on Wikipedia” and/or others
  • Development of the Crimean Tatar Wikipedia: contests, events to attract new contributors, establishing partnerships etc.
  • Supporting communities of sister Wikimedia projects, including awards to most active users of sister projects in Ukrainian and creation of training materials
  • Organizing events for underrepresented groups to engage them in editing Wikipedia (women, senior citizens, neurodiverse people, other vulnerable groups)
    • Courses and other events within the “Wikipedia for 55+” program
    • Support for events to engage women
    • Support for events and initiatives to engage neurodiverse people (courses, Mental Health Week on Wikipedia)
    • Wikischools and other events to engage young people
    • Events for other underrepresented groups (depending on initiatives)

Wikimedia community support and development

Instruction for community members, facilitation of experience sharing

  • Organizing training sessions for the community for specific skills (based on the results of the analysis of community needs and capacities)
  • Scholarships to participate in external training sessions per requests
  • Wikiconference 2026
  • Events for Wikimedia Ukraine's internal governance:
    • Wikimedia Ukraine's General Assembly
    • Strategy session or other events to develop the 2027–2029 strategy
  • Supporting initiatives to organize other events for the Ukrainian Wikimedia community (for example, events for local communities in specific cities)
  • Regular support for Wikipedia administrators and patrollers: events for training and experience sharing, regular awards, thematic campaigns, etc.
  • Scholarships for international Wikimedia events, particularly:
    • Wikimedia Hackathon 2026
    • Wikimania 2026
    • Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2026

Increasing the community's resilience, motivation and awareness

Awareness about Wikimedia

Media support and promotion of Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects

  • Communications work to promote Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects, publication of stories of individual volunteers, as well as popularization of Wikimedia Ukraine's projects and overall activities, according to the current consistent communication practices
  • Support of existing communications channels (social media, blogs) and launch of new ones as needed; work on new formats in social media, particularly video and audio/podcasts
  • Working with the media – delivering regular press releases, pitching topics proactively
  • International communication: spreading information about the the organization's and the Ukrainian community's activities and needs among the international Wikimedia community
  • Organizing promotional events (press conferences, lectures, webinars etc.)

Working with readers and the general public to increase awareness

  • Creation of informational resources and guides about Wikipedia and sister projects (texts, videos)
  • Organization of lectures and trainings about Wikipedia and wikiprojects, in particular in cooperation with external partners

Advocacy

  • Promoting the use of free licenses
  • Supporting initiatives for "freedom of panorama" advocacy in Ukraine
  • Advocacy of other changes that benefit the development of free knowledge
  • Monitoring relevant changes in legislation (especially with regard to European integration)

Institutional development

  • Increasing involvement of the wikicommunity in the organization's activities, increasing the number of members of the NGO Wikimedia Ukraine and other volunteers
  • Improving training, onboarding, and offboarding practices for key volunteers, improving the process of transferring institutional memory (creation of permanent organizational committees; creation of an onboarding procedure for new members of organizational committees and offboarding of volunteers who leave them; creation of materials/documents for transferring institutional memory)
  • Attracting additional sources of funding from outside the Wikimedia movement with the participation of other organizations and institutions, supporting grant applications of partners
  • Incremental improvements in operational management and coordination of staff and contractors
  • Advancement of international cooperation, particularly through Wikimedia CEE Hub and Wikimedia Europe
